War Horse

13 02 2014

Our family had a special treat last night. We travelled to the other side of the country to see War Horse at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh.

It was a spectacular show. The music was good, the props, the puppets – all quite enthralling. Definitely a show worth going to see.

The end refrain has haunted me though:
“Only remembered for what we have done.”

No.

In a limited sense it’s true. We all “remember” Alexander Fleming, Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, etc because of what they did; how they have impacted our lives with their inventions/discoveries.

But it doesn’t stop there. Our greatest humanitarian efforts are not what count – no matter how great our effect on others.

The refrain of C. T. Studd is much more accurate:

Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.
