The Real Thing

23 12 2009

I love Christmas time. I’m a sucker for Christmas trees, fairy lights, mince pies, stockings on the wall, and joy, oh joy, it looks like it could be a white Christmas.

But I had to grit my teeth when listening to the Christmas message on the radio yesterday. The rabbi was expounding the delights of the religious festivals of light – lumping Christmas in with the other festivals as a time “to have light and hope in our hearts for the the Spring around the corner with longer daylight hours”. If that’s our main hope this Christmas, it’s not just the turkey that’s stuffed.

When Jesus spoke …  he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  John 8 v12

That’s real hope, real light, and real life.
