what might this comment mean to a women living with abuse ?

This is a complex topic and not really connected to the initial quote. My short answer is that in a situation like the one described, we are not talking about a relationship that should thrive (as there are no grounds for a relationship). If someone is being abused, they should get out and get help. The abuser doesn’t love the abusee (obviously) and the abusee is not loving the abuser by letting them continue to abuse.

I agree with your answer from ‘my short answer is…’ , I also agree with the fact that it’s a complex issue. It is however an issue very connected to the quote since increasing mercy to a perpetrator is not only a course often tried by christian women but very very often actively encouraged by churches.

I suppose I’m thinking of where I lifted the quote from – a book by Max Lucado about relationships built out of love, trust and respect. An abusive relationship is none of those.
